Kihei Fourth Friday Coming to Town Starting December 28, 2012

Kihei SunsetThere’s a new party coming to the Maui town I live in. It’s called “Kīhei Fourth Friday.”

We’ve had a “Fridays” tradition going on Maui for a while now. First Friday happens in Wailuku, Second Friday in Lāhainā, Third Friday in Makawao and now, Fourth Friday in Kīhei. The Maui Friday Town Parties is an initiative developed by the Maui County Office of Economic Development, and is intended to showcase our historic towns and local businesses, bringing them additional visibility they might not get on a day-to-day basis. Every Friday, somewhere on the island, the community comes together to celebrate food, art, music and Maui culture.

The inaugural Kihei Fourth Friday Town Party on December 28 takes place from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Azeka Shopping Center Mauka. Highlights include:

Opening Ceremony:
6:00 p.m. – Hawaiian blessing and invocation by Cultural Advisor, Kimokeo Kapahulehua

6:00 p.m. – Hula performances
7:00 p.m. – The House Shakers, featuring Lenny Castellanos from Mick Fleetwood’s Blues Band
8:00 p.m. – Erin Smith and The Throwdowns

The Keiki/Youth Zone provides a place for family-friendly activities and arts & crafts for children and teens. Hawaiian cultural crafts, lei making, language and educational activities will be featured.

There will be a large food court area with many local taste treats. In addition, Azeka Shopping Center Mauka has a variety of eateries, including: Coconuts Fish Café, Diamonds Ice Bar & Grill, Java Café, Jawz Fish Tacos Island Style Grill, Panda Express, Peggy Sue’s, and Stella Blues Café.

Social Media:
One of the things that differentiates the Kihei Town Party from the others is the strong support of the tech community. They are putting together a “Social Media VIP Lounge” specifically for those who have been helping to spread the word online, including a large screen TV displaying a livestream of the event.

The VIP Lounge welcomes social media practitioners from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the night of the event, with pupus and a private lounge area with plenty of power outlets and free wifi. In fact, they’re working with the local cable/Internet provider to broadcast a free, open wifi signal for everyone attending the event.

Maui Brick Oven Pizza will be sponsoring the Social Media VIP Lounge for December.
